Introducing the new weekly series "Friday Freebie!"
For my first freebie, I am going to share a resource that we used for our inventions and inventors unit study. It was a loosely formatted unit study using several nonfiction books, some fun videos, a Magic Treehouse fiction work and its supplemental fact book, and an invention plan that allowed each child to create and test out their own invention. Here's a list of some of our favorite books that we used and all of them were available at our library:
Girls Think of Everything: Stories of Ingenious Inventions by Women
Mistakes That Worked
Build a Better Mousetrap: Make Classic Inventions, Discover Your Problem Solving Genius, and Take the Inventor's Challenge
Magic Tree House #38: Monday with a Mad Genius
Magic Tree House Fact Tracker #19: Leonardo da Vinci
If you can't find those at your local library, you could check for discount copies online or you could do a topic search at your library and see what books might work for you.
For the hands on activity, each child got to try their hand at making their own invention using the invention plan freebie. It's a 3 page printout that starts with a section for brainstorming, followed by a page for documenting the actual process, and a place to showcase the finished product. You can snag the freebie here.
Have fun inventing!
